Go/No-Go and Flanker Tasks: Training Inhibition and Attention Under Conflict

Plain-language guide to Go/No-Go false alarms, Flanker congruent vs incongruent trials, and how to practice both on Reflextry without chasing reckless speed.

Two classic lab tasks show up in Reflextry’s reflex arena for good reason: Go/No-Go stresses stopping a prepared action, and Flanker stresses selecting a target while ignoring conflicting neighbors. Both punish reckless speed.

Go/No-Go in one paragraph

Most trials say Go (press). A minority say No-Go (do not press). The high Go rate builds a prepotent press habit—so the rare stop trial becomes the real test. Score good Go hits and successful withholds. False alarms (pressing on No-Go) reveal impulsivity under time pressure.

Training cues

  • Keep the finger ready, not tense.
  • After a long Go streak, expect a No-Go.
  • Slightly slower clean Go hits beat hyperfast hits with constant false alarms.

Flanker in one paragraph

Five arrows appear. Respond only to the center direction. Congruent trials agree; incongruent trials put flankers in opposition. Conflict slows you and invites errors because two response plans activate and one must be suppressed.

Training cues

  • Fixate the center character before the string “votes” as a crowd.
  • Do not majority-vote with the flankers.
  • Raise incongruent accuracy before hunting average RT.

If you false-alarm constantly, start with Go/No-Go. If you are accurate on stops but collapse when symbols conflict, emphasize Flanker.

Choice reaction sits nearby

Choice RT adds multiple illuminated targets without a withhold rule. It is decision latency among alternatives. Many players need all three: simple RT, choice RT, and inhibition/conflict drills.

Session design

  1. Two minutes easy warm-up (simple RT or slow Go).
  2. One focused Go/No-Go block emphasizing zero false alarms.
  3. One Flanker block emphasizing incongruent accuracy.
  4. Stop at 12–15 minutes while quality is high.

What improvement looks like

  • Fewer false alarms at the same Go RT
  • Higher incongruent Flanker accuracy
  • Tighter RT variance on correct trials

Not a cinematic “brain unlocked” montage.

Honesty about transfer

These paradigms are used in cognitive neuroscience for a reason—they isolate executive control components. Browser practice can sharpen those components in the task. Real-world impulse control still depends on sleep, stress, and context. Use the tools as precise drills, then apply the same “pause before acting” habit where it matters.

Warm-up that protects inhibition

Cold starts produce false alarms. Spend one minute on slow Go-only responses (if your mode allows practice) or simple reaction, then begin scored Go/No-Go. For Flanker, do ten congruent-only mental rehearsals: “center only” as a verbal cue before the first incongruent block.

Interpreting mixed results

Fast Go RT + many false alarms → impulsivity dominant.
Slow Go RT + clean withholds → overly cautious; carefully raise readiness without mashing.
Flanker congruent fine / incongruent poor → conflict control is the bottleneck, not vision.

Write one sentence diagnosis after each session. That habit beats screenshots of vanity scores.

Coaching kids or teammates

Keep instructions short: “Green means go. Red means freeze.” For Flanker: “Only the middle arrow.” Celebrate clean withholds as loudly as fast hits—otherwise learners optimize the wrong number.
